From Roland:

Thank you, voters of Holly Hill, for entrusting me with the honor of being your Mayor. This was my sixth campaign in the last eight years and I received the most votes I have ever received. I ran a positive campaign based on your issues and there is much to be done.

The challenges will be great, but with your help they are attainable. Please feel free to contact me with any of your concerns, ideas,  suggestions, issues  and questions and I will be there for you.

Together let's move this City forward! Quality of life is #1! Once again, thank you from my family and I. See you at the meetings the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 7pm.                                                                                Roland

New era opens in Holly Hill
City welcomes new mayor, 3 commissioners

HOLLY HILL -- A changing of the guard occurred in Holly Hill Tuesday evening as four of the five seats on the commissioners' dais changed occupants.

Volusia County Chairman Frank Bruno administered the oath of office to newly elected Mayor Roland Via as Bill Arthur stepped down after 10 years and three terms in office. Voters imposed term limits on the mayor's office in 1997, making Arthur ineligible to run for a fourth time.

Bruno and Vice Chairman Joie Alexander made a special presentation to Arthur in recognition of his service to the city, proclaiming Nov. 22 as "Mayor Bill Arthur Day."

In his first official act, Via also made a presentation to Arthur on behalf of the citizens of Holly Hill, thanking the former mayor for his contributions to the city.

After receiving the accolades, Arthur reflected on his time in office and thanked the city for allowing him to serve.

"I've thought of all the things the city has done for me," Arthur said. "I'll remember these 10 years forever; it has been the greatest thrill of my life."

Bruno also swore in John Penny, Traci Anderson, and Mark Reed as new commissioners. Penny ousted 18-year commission veteran Arthur Byrnes in District 1. Mark Reed beat out Lou Schmitt in District 3, and Traci Ann Anderson won the District 4 seat vacated by Via. Penny was also appointed vice mayor.

In other commission business, Dr. and Mrs. James Buck and Mr. and Mrs. Blake Beasley petitioned the city to voluntarily annex their properties.

The commissioners voted unanimously to approve the request.

The commissioners also appointed Patricia Cheesbro as a full-time member to the Community Redevelopment Advisory board seat vacated by new commissioner John Penny. Debbie Gerberman was appointed as an alternate.

The next regular meeting will be Dec. 13, and will be the last commission meeting for the year.
